(2)       National River Trail

Introduction to National River Trail (DSK)

The National River Trail (DSK) Programme is a new initiative that has been set out in 2030 Strategic Plan of Ministry of Environment and Water (KASA) as one of the control mechanisms for river pollution and flood risk.

Trail construction is one of the Nature-Based-Solutions (NBS) approaches to address socio-environmental challenges through sustainable management and use of the environment. The implementation of this program will involve the cooperation of various parties such as the authorities (Government), non-governmental organizations (NGOs), corporate bodies, local communities, students and others in playing their respective roles to maintain the sustainability of the river and the environment.

With a trail by the river or body of water, it will encourage nature-based activities such as picnics, fishing and cycling among the local community. The presence of people in the area will prevent irresponsible parties from turning the river into a waste dump. In addition, it can also make the location of the trail as a tourism icon and catalyse the local economy.

Objectives of DSK Program

  1. Ensure the sustainability and beauty of the river, as well as control activities that can cause pollution.

  2. Creating a sense of shared responsibility among various parties

  3. Encourage nature-based activities among the local community

  4. Stimulate economic -based activities such as river ecotourism

Types of River Trail

  • Pebbles
