Pontian Dam

Active ImagePontian dam, an earthfill dam was completed in 1985. It forms part of the Rompin-Endau Agricultural development Project in the State of Pahang about 120km from Kuantan. It is sited on the tidal estuary of Sungai Pontian, about 21km from the river mouth and is drained by an area of about 170sq.km. The dam was designed to provide storage for the Pontian Irrigation Scheme and to form a barrier against saline intrusion. It coprises an earthfill embankment, a 100m wide open channel reinforced concrete service spillway incorporated with a 3.66 m wide gated outlet, an auxiliary grass spillway and a main irrigation canal complete with an intake structure. The gated outlet was incorporated in the reconstructed spillway to allow for lowering of the reservoir level in case of an emergency. The original constructed spillway failed 2½ months after impounding.
