Padang Saga Dam is an earthfill embankment located just downstream of the confluence of Sungai Petang and Sungai Saga on the island of Langkawi, Kedah. The dam was constructed in 1964 and major remedial and upgrading of the dam was carried out between 1988 and 1989. The dam is drained by a catchment area of about 12sq.km and has a storage capacity of 0.14Mcm. The main purpose of the dam is to provide irrigation water for single cropping to about 405Ha of paddy land in Bohor area and another 202Ha in Padang Gaong area. In addition to irrigation supply, water in the reservoir is pumped to a 5Mcm bunded storage capacity (sited adjacent to the dam) by JKR Langkawi for domestic and industrial water supply. JPS has carried out works to beautify the dam and provided recreational facilities for visitors at the damsite. Padang Saga Dam comprises an earthfill embankment, an open channel concrete spillway, cut and cover outlet works and two irrigation intakes. The channel spillway is sited at the right abutment and the twin culverts outlet structure transverse the dam embankment. The irrigation intake are sited on the left of the dam embankment and the right of the spillway respectively. |
